Boston has one of the 10 best riverwalks in the U.S., according to USA Today readers

Shared public spaces that foster outdoor activity in a socially distanced manner have become more important than ever during the coronavirus pandemic, and Boston has one of the best in the nation, according to USA Today.

The publication just named Boston’s Charles River Esplanade among the 10 best riverwalks in the U.S., part of its 2021 10Best Reader’s Choice Awards.

The No. 1 riverwalk in the country is the Detroit International RiverWalk.

“In recent decades, cities across the United States have been revitalizing their river fronts, transforming them into vibrant spaces for outdoor recreation, nightlife, cultural activity and scenic views,” USA Today wrote.

Here’s what the publication had to say about the Charles River Esplanade:

“The Charles River Esplanade in downtown Boston features a 64-acre park and 17 miles of running trails along the waterfront. The riverfront is also home to a community boat launch, a small seasonal cafe and an outdoor amphitheater for summer concerts.”

The Esplanade just wrapped up a four-week-long socially distant light and sound show called “Hatched: Breaking through the Silence.” The program provided “a safe, open-air destination for people and their families to experience art while enjoying the tranquil beauty of the Esplanade in winter,” Michael Nichols, executive director of the Esplanade Association, said in a press release about the event.

For the 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards lists, USA Today travel experts select 20 nominees in topics from food to lodging, destinations to things to do. Then the publication asks readers to cast votes to determine the top 10.
